The big news today that’s buzzing around in US this morning is that the Chairman of Federal Communications Commission has called for regulations requiring an “Open Internet”. Not that it has been “closed” up until now but what he rather meant is that the ISPs/Carriers such as Verizon, Comcast and the big ol’ AT&T etc., should not be discriminating (by either blocking or slowing) against any type of legal content that subscribers want to use over their networks.
While this was bold on FCC Chief’s part to commit to Net Neutrality and is being welcomed by many with loud cheers, it is to be seen how far this would come to fruition. Senate Republicans quickly made moves by Monday afternoon to prevent and block the FCC’s proposed rules (we could only wish they move and act equally fast in passing legislations that would benefit the public). Their argument – the Telecom industry has managed to stay profitable even during tough economic times and any industry that is able to thrive should be allowed to do so without government interference failing which it would stifle innovation.
